Our Family

Skip the “what” and get right to the “who.”

Our “Mission” can be summarized in these four points:

Tiny House

“for us, being a big family living in a tiny house will bring us financial freedom, closer relationship, & enormous life opportunities.”

Environmentally Conscious

“We started caring about our environment when we started caring about our food — and as a big family, we eat a lot of food!”

Self Sufficient

“We are working toward providing our own food, our own water, our own electricity…”

Life Simplification

“Bottom line is that “Stuff Equals Stress.” A big family usually means a lot of stuff, which means a lot of stress. We are working towards reducing stress.”

Tiny House People

While our journey is not only about living in a tiny house, there are certainly some stats that make that part of the journey incredibly exciting.

Just look at the stats on the right. While you are looking, make sure you begin each sentence with “% of Tiny House People that ________.”

  • Have Less Credit Card Debt than Average Americans 89%
  • Have Zero Credit Card Debt 65%
  • Are Living Mortgage Free 68%
  • Have More Savings Than Average Americans 55%

So finally, here we are. All the players in this journey.

In addition to working a full-time job as a project manager, Darren is a researcher, an experimenter, a builder, a general jack of all trades. He loves his wife and his children immensely and could not be more excited for this adventure for SO MANY reasons, but chiefly how it will bring our family closer together.

Melody is a full time mother, CEO of the Mike household, NASM certified Personal Trainer, Group Fitness Instructor, BeachBodyCoach, Singer/Songwriter, Organizer, Jesus Lover, Wife, and well, you get the idea, a woman of many hats. Adventurous and creative, she loves spending time outdoors and encouraging others to be Lean, Clean, & Green.

Our Kids

Our Kids

I don’t see very often where Tiny House people allow their children to have a voice in their journey. I’ve often wondered what the “kiddos” thought processes are on the journey & so we are giving voice to ours. It should be a fun part of our site as our kids are very opinionated and aren’t afraid to share.

Our Ha-RV-ey

We named our RV Harvey.  You know, like, our-v, our RV, or as we slur it, HaRVey!  Harvey was not planned, but after our original housing option fell through, we needed to find another option, fast!  It's like a temporary tiny house before our tiny house! This is a...

Solid Foundation – We Ordered Our Trailers!

That headline pretty much tells most of this story. However, if you have read any of our posts to date, you know we like to tell stories too, right? I contacted quite a few folks while researching where to buy our trailers. Of course, cost was a major issue--we are...

That is how the last month of our life has felt!  A completely crazy whirlwind of con-stant-ly changing plans, a moment notice of people coming by to check out some part of selling our house (like our stuff and even our house), more packing and moving stuff around,...

It is Friday morning, May 27th, 2016, and Darren says to me, “Hey, why don’t you ask your friend Kristy Bruck if she can come look at our house and tell us if there is anything else we need to do in order to sell our house.” (We had just finished overhauling our...

What We Don’t Know

There are several quotes out there about what you don't know... "What you don't know CAN'T hurt you" "The more you know, the more you realize you don't know" "What you don't know CAN hurt you" "The less you know, the more you think you know" "You never really know...

Going… Going… Gone

Our quickly thrown together garage sale was a great success! We still have a few things left to sell, but our house is pretty empty! Truly, I thought it was going to be a lot harder to let go of things that I cared about at some level, but it wasn’t! Thanks to a few...

Saying Goodbye

Loss isn’t something we humans deal well with much of the time.  It’s hard to lose, isn’t it?  Whether in big or small measurements, it’s something we can all relate too.  I have lost a job, lost a friend, lost an extremely close grandma, lost a dog, lost a secure...

To Be or Not To Be… Self-Sufficient

How many songs can you think of, billboards, books, or other sources that convey this message: I depend on ME. Though it’s true that Darren and I want to be more self-sufficient and intentional when it comes to where/how we spend our money, time, and the resources we...
