That word means a lot of things to a lot of different people. For some it’s a country, a childhood house, a city or state, a special place that holds cherished memories, a group of people that accept you or live together, among others. Every time I drive north to the beautiful areas of northern Minnesota, I hear Chantal Kreviazuk’s song Feels Like Home, playing in my head! Being in God’s beautiful nature feels so much like home to me. I feel like time stops and slows down and I feel fully present and alive, who I’m meant to be, and enjoying His creation.
I’ve lived in a few different homes such as ND, MN, MA, NE, my parents house, my second family the Coleman’s house, my apartment, in a college dorm, renting a room from a friend, and then something new all together. I got married! All at once I had a husband, a (step)son, a two bedroom house, and a new community of people surrounding me in a slightly different culture than the one I was raised in, both in location and spouse. My homes were nothing compared to my husband’s military upbringing and previous military vocation.
Darren and I did have one home in common though. The Bible says that when we put our trust in Jesus, our body is the living temple of the Holy Spirit (1st Corinthians 6:19), or home. So my husband and I are now joined as two-in-one, one flesh (Genesis 2:24), and though we have separate souls and identities, we are one. Though we fail each other daily, we are committed to doing this thing called life together until the day one of us dies. Some days this is GREAT news! Other days….. Just kidding! We are two very imperfect people that love each other and love the Lord, which brings me to another home.
I saw this canvas the other day while out with my family. Home is wherever I am with you. The idealistic romantic in me immediately fell in love with it! I thought of our future tiny home, our simple life, and our close family. I thought about how, like many romantic comedies, songs, and novels write: It doesn’t matter where I am as long as I’m with you! Then I thought, WAKE UP, MELODY!!! Reality harshly struck my core as I remembered our imperfect world, and for the first time in quite a while, the truth of that lovely sentiment was redirected. I remembered that of all the many people who have felt like home to me, family, my closest friends, and even nature, this world is not my home, and neither is anyone in the flesh.
Peace flooded my heart as I quickly remembered that the “you” in that sentiment is neither my husband, nor my kids, the house we live in, the city or state we are dwelling in, nor the beauty that surrounds it. The “you” is Jesus Christ who died on the cross for our sins, and the beauty of that truth lies not only in heaven, but in the moments I choose to listen to the Holy Spirit who is living and active in my present life. I am home when I am tuned into Him and He is wherever I am!
So though Darren & I need to listen as He directs our steps, we are already home! Our current four bedroom house is empty if it is not filled with Him. We are just going to have a new residence here on earth for a while, and live a more intentional lifestyle. We will let His peace, which transcends all understanding (Philippians 4:7), guide us as we embark on a trail that is less traveled now-a-days, and we welcome all kinds of questions and comments as we do! Feel free to leave them below!
